Gloria Jean’s offers Cup of Excellence winning coffee

Coffee chain Gloria Jean’s is offering its customers the chance to be among the first in the world to try one of the rarest coffee beans in the world.

It’s soon to take delivery of the award-winning Lot# 33 Benimana Moussa Sacof Kigeyobean, the coffee bean that was recently awarded the prestigious Rwanda Cup of Excellence award.

The Cup of Excellence awards are the result of a strict competition that selects the best coffee produced in a particular country for that year.

The winning beans are chosen by a group of national and international cuppers and are cupped at least five different times during the competition process.

The final winners are awarded the prestigious Cup of Excellence award and the coffee lots are sold to the highest bidder during an internet auction.

Only 3,799 bags of the Lot# 33 Benimana Moussa Sacof Kigeyobean bean were produced, making it an exceptionally rare bean in the context of the eight million metric tons of green coffee produced globally each year.

Gloria Jean’s Coffees’s global drink development manager, Kane Bodiam, was selected to be part of the group to judge the 2011 Cup of Excellence competition in Rwanda.

“It was a privilege to be on the Rwanda Cup of Excellence international jury,” said Bodiam, “Rwandan coffee is exciting, from its bright flavours, to its floral and citrus aromas and Lot# 33 Benimana Moussa Sacof Kigeyo is no exception.

“Lot# 33 Benimana Moussa Sacof Kigeyo from the 2011 Rwandan Cup of Excellence is an exquisite cup that exhibits fruit flavours of grape, guava and passionfruit.”

Sacof Kigeyo beans are specially grown in the western region of Rwanda, before being hand-picked and roasted to create a well developed body, superb aroma and sweetness.

“This single origin bean plays on the palate in so many ways and the mouth feel has lively and vibrant tones that evokes pear and red apple sweetness,” said Bodiam.

“It’s a rare opportunity to be able to enjoy one of the finest coffees in the world and one with such a distinct character and aromatic profile.”

The #3 Benumana Moussa Sacof Kigeyo coffee will be available exclusively at all Gloria Jean’s cafes nationwide from 22 March to buy to take home, while some selected cafes will be serving the coffee as well.
