Chinese drive record tourism

The number of tourists from China has hit a record high of 1,002,500 over the past year according to new figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics this week.

The number of Chinese tourists — from the mainland and Hong Kong — has effectively trebled in the past decade and is currently growing at 14 per cent per annum.

CommSec senior analyst Craig James said the growth in Chinese tourists has been staggering.

“In just under four years, the annual number of Chinese tourists to Australia has doubled. And if the current growth rates keep up, China will still surpass New Zealand as our primary source of tourists in around five years’ time” he said.

“The other important development is that overall tourist arrivals are growing just shy of the fastest pace in 14-years no doubt boosted by the improvement in the global economy.”

Peak industry body, Tourism & Transport Forum welcomed the figures but said they also indicated Australia is missing “a massive opportunity” with the Chinese inbound market.

Chief Executive Officer Margy Osmond said that growth from China has been solid but far behind  other comparable countries.

“So far this year, the number of Chinese tourists going to Canada has grown by more than 30 per cent while the US has seen growth of 23 per cent,” she said.

“This is a clear indication that Australia needs reform to make it easier for Chinese visitors to come here.”

Despite significant marketing investments from government tourism agencies, Australia’s visa regime is not efficient enough resulting potential visitors are choosing other destinations, said Osmond.

“Independent travellers from China wanting an Australian visa must pay $130, provide considerable evidence, complete a 15-page paper-based application in English, and wait up to 15 days for processing.

“By contrast, a potential visitor from the US, the UK or even Hong Kong can simply fill in a quick online form and receive an electronic visa for $20.
