New tourism strategy to be unveiled

Pensacola will join cities across the United States in celebrating the significant impact travel and tourism have on local economies during National Travel and Tourism Week from Saturday to May 10.

“This week really puts our local tourism industry in the spotlight and gives us the chance to emphasize how valuable this sector is to our community and economy,” said Steve Hayes, president of Visit Pensacola. “Our average visitor spends $155 a day at our local businesses — from restaurants to shops to grocery stores and outdoor activities.”

The latest statistics show the tourism industry in Pensacola is growing at an above average rate. Revenue generated from the Tourism Development Tax in 2014 was 10.9 percent more than 2013. Pensacola’s tourism economy is exceeding growth rates when compared to neighboring counties, as well, according to the December 2014 Sales Tax Revenue Report.

Direct visitor spending in 2014 totaled $700 million. And the tourism industry supports 20,000 jobs in the Pensacola Bay Area.

On May 7, Visit Pensacola will unveil a five-year strategic plan, appropriately named Destination 2020, which outlines strategies and opportunities to further rev up the tourism industry in the Pensacola Bay Area.

“Now, and over the course of the next few years, we have the chance to capitalize on the growing number of travelers looking to spend money on beautiful scenery and beach experiences. We’re excited to reveal the steps we will take to attract those travelers and make Pensacola a key destination. The five-year plan will drive tourism success while positioning us as a great place to live and visit,” Hayes said.

The presentation is taking place in downtown Pensacola at the Rex Theatre, 18 N. Palafox Street. It begins promptly at 2 p.m. and the public is invited to attend, but seating is limited. To reserve a spot, RSVP directly through www.destination2020.org.
