A Cornish burger chain has been shortlisted for an international award for design. Hubbox restaurant in Truro is in competition for the international Restaurant and Bar Design Awards 2015 title.

Art directed by St Ives-based team Meor Design, the Hubbox Truro restaurant, which is based in a former chapel, has been nominated in the category of restaurant or bar in a heritage building, and is up against six venues from across the UK, including sites in London, Liverpool and Glasgow.

When Hubbox outgrew its original location – a shipping container based on Lemon Quay – it found an equally unusual new home in a 19th-century Wesleyan chapel on Kenwyn Street in Truro. The eaterie was recently named one of the 10 coolest restaurant interiors in the world by The Guardian, and one of 100 top places to eat in the country by Casual Dining Magazine.

The Restaurant and Bar Design Awards is now in its seventh year and is the only awards dedicated to the design of food and beverage spaces. With over 3,800 entries from the UK and 70 other countries in the past six years, the awards attract the world’s top designers, hospitality operators and judges.

Richard Boon, Hubbox managing director, said: “Our goal is to make Hubbox the number one name for burgers, hot dogs and craft beers. But we also want to make our venues unique and memorable spaces for people to enjoy our food, so the design accolades we’ve received over the past year have been a credit to Nik and his team.”

The Restaurant and Bar Design 2015 Awards ceremony will be held in London on October 1.
