Maldives scouts fresh talent to boost tourism

Maldives on Thursday kicked off a fair aimed at scouting fresh talent to boost its tourism industry.

The tourism job fair, being held at the National Art Gallery in capital Male, was inaugurated by economic minister Mohamed Saeed at a ceremony on Thursday afternoon.

Speaking at the ceremony, minister8 Saeed said tourism is the most important source of jobs in the Maldives with 50,000 jobs created in the sector so far. Interest shown by the youth in tourism related jobs has increased as well, he added.

Saeed, who until his appointment to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s cabinet in 2013 spent his entire career at the helm of the Maldives tourism, said the island nation has become the gold standard of tourism worldwide. The Maldives, he said, has become a “fashion” among travellers.

The tourism job fair, which offers information about jobs available in more than 60 resorts in the Maldives, will go on till Saturday evening. The jobs on offer range from posts such as communication officer, human resources manager and reservation officer to chef and IT technician.

The fair, which is organised to mark the World Tourism Day and the golden jubilee of Maldives independence, is open for public from 4-6pm.

The Maldives, an island nation with virtually no natural resources, depends heavily on its world-famous upmarket tourism for much its revenue. The industry also employs a sizeable majority of its workforce.
